Small town
- 11/10/2015
Cortland is a small town geographically right in the center of New York. The population is around 20K and has been the same for decades. Cortland is a typical small town. Limited shopping and not too many restaurants considering there is a State University here.
The one thing about Cortland is that everyone is very friendly and welcoming. A slow paced fairly inexpensive place to live. However Cortland is very close to the Finger Lakes wine region and Syracuse University. Both are only about 30 minutes away.

Quality of life

I was born here (but grew up in Syracuse thank god) and moved back when I was a teen. Year after year the city goes downhill. It's often referred to as a roach motel because they check in but don't check out. Any real medical attention needed should be sought in Syracuse. Garbage bags must be bought at a local store at 2.50 per bag and recycling is mandatory and you must provide your own

Cortland -- Compelling Value
- 9/25/2005
I relocated to Cortland, NY from Abingdon, MD two years ago. The house prices are much lower, but new construction is virutally non-existent in the immediate area.
Virgil is a nice area to look for houses. Rural and very scenic with much to do. The City of Cortland itself is crowded and rather poor. Homer (just to the North) is another nice area to look
